Job Description
Under limited supervision, provides basic, comprehensive, professional dental services. May manage a small dental program (typically consisting of a dentist, a dental hygienist, and a dental assistant) in a state hospital, prison or similar setting. Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS A Current Georgia license to practice dentistry.
RESPONSIBILITY I
Provides diagnosis of patients' dental status utilizing accepted clinical and radiological techniques. May arrange for appropriate consultations to determine treatment needed. 1. Provides provisional diagnosis for emergency and routine referrals and documents in patient's dental record according to established guidelines. 2. Documents review of medical history and physical status of patients, and consults with physician when medical complications or indications for premedication exist before rendering treatment 3. Discusses diagnosis with patient and/or treatment team to determine course of treatment. 4. Completes dental assessments according to accepted practices and within established time frames. 5. Oversees radiographic procedures. Interprets radiographs before implementing procedures or documents absence of radiographs.
RESPONSIUBILITY II
Provides comprehensive professional dental treatment to address the oral health needs of patients. Provides routine recall exams, simple extractions, restorations, prosthetic services, prophylaxis, fluoride treatments and endodontic treatments. May arrange for referral to dental specialists when appropriate. 1. Initiates and completes treatment within established time frames of needs identification and according to established practice 2. Provides dental care according to established practices. Procedures may include routine recall exams, prophylaxis, dental restorations, simple extractions, prosthetic services, topical applications of fluoride and/or endodontic services. 3. Contacts dental specialist within established time frames of provisional diagnosis to arrange for referral when necessary. 4. Provides emergency treatment according to established protocols
RESPONSIBILITY III
Instructs patients in personal oral hygiene, the need for periodic dental examinations and the relationship of diet to tooth decay.
1. Utilizes standard dental index to document oral hygiene status for dental patients. 2. Instructs patients regarding personal oral hygiene. Documents in patient dental records according to established guidelines. 3. Stresses the need for periodic dental examinations and the relationship of diet to tooth decay in all personal oral hygiene instructions.
RESPONSIBILITY IV
Manages administrative functions of the Dental Department.
1. Makes accurate annual budget projections and submits yearly budget for major equipment purchases within established time frames. 2. Monitors expenditures to ensure dental department remains within budget allocations. Alerts management of potential budget overruns in a timely manner. 3. Prepares required reports accurately and in a timely manner. 4. Requests supplies and equipment according to established guidelines. 5. Provides Dental Department orientation to new patients as needed. 6. Consults with administrative staff as necessary to resolve issues. 7. In a correctional facility, responds verbally or in writing, within an established time frame, to inmates' dental requests. Maintains accurate log of inmate requests according to standard operating procedures. 8. Monitors clinic's compliance with standards for cleanliness, fire safety and OSHA regulations for caustic, flammable, sharp and bio-hazardous materials.
RESPONSIBILITY V
Supervises the work of dental hygienist(s) and dental assistant(s).
1. Sets work goals, defines tasks and divides work according to program needs. 2. Coaches dental hygienist(s) and dental assistant(s) to ensure goals of the dental department are met and to identify training needs. 3. Monitors daily activities of dental hygienist(s) and dental assistant(s) to ensure compliance with Dental Board rules and regulations, facility policies and universal precautions.
RESPONSIBILITY VI
Creates and maintains a high performance environment characterized by positive leadership and a strong team orientation. 1. Defines goals and/or required results at beginning of performance period and gains acceptance of ideas by creating a shared vision. 2. Communicates regularly with staff on progress toward defined goals and/or required results; providing specific feedback and initiating corrective action when defined goals and/or results are not met. 3. Confers regularly with staff to review employee relations climate, specific problem areas and actions necessary for improvement. 4. Evaluates employees at scheduled intervals; obtains and considers all relevant information in evaluations and supports staff by giving praise and constructive criticism. 5. Recognizes contributions and celebrates accomplishments. 6. Motivates staff to improve quantity and quality of work performed and provides training and development opportunities as appropriate.
RESPONSIBILITY VII
Maintains accurate dental records and completes required reports of patient activity.
1. Labels dental records accurately with appropriate patient identification according to established guidelines. 2. Dates and signs information entered in dental records, ensuring entries are complete and legible. 3. Charts dental pathosis on dental records using standard dental clinic notations. Updates according to established guidelines. 4. Completes required reports accurately and in a timely manner.
RESPONSIBILITY VIII
Develops and maintains an infection control program. Follows all safety/risk management practices in performing duties. Performs required maintenance on dental equipment 1. Develops an infection control program consistent with department and other applicable guidelines. 2. Trains dental staff on proper infection control procedures and monitors their ongoing compliance. 3. Uses all safety equipment and supplies properly and according to established guidelines. 4. Follows universal precautions when dealing with patients. 5. Reports and documents all hazardous or infectious exposures according to established guidelines.
RESPONSIBILITY IX
Participates in Medical and Dental Staff Committees, interdisciplinary conferences and seminars on the care and treatment of patients.
1. Attends and actively participates in all scheduled staff meetings or other meetings as required. 2. Attends interdisciplinary conferences involving dental issues. 3. Attends all mandatory training scheduled by the facility.
RESPONSIBILITY X
Evaluates dental care needs and quality of services and initiates quality improvement actions.
1. Performs periodic studies of dental needs and services within area of responsibility. 2. Participates in Peer Review involving other agency dental clinics when required. 3. Develops and maintains departmental Quality Improvement plan according to established guidelines.
